Cross-Cultural Communication Concerning Face Culture between China and Western Countries:

Abstract: The Wedding Banquet is a classic movie that reflects culture differences between China and western countries. In this movie, it shows some of the conflicts that happened in cross-cultural communications because of the different conceptions of the face. The reader can better understand western people’s opinion about face from analyzing this movie and improve their ability in cross-cultural communication. In this thesis, the author introduces research about face in Chinese culture and compares it to cultures of western countries. Then, by analyzing some details and examples in the movie The Wedding Banquet made by Li An, this thesis shows how the face perception influences cross-cultural communication. From three scenes in particular (the giving of gifts, the hosting of weddings, and toasting), the reader will better understand the significance of the face values and western people’s concept of these values. At last, the thesis provides some methods and ways on how to conduct cross-cultural communication to help the communicator to improve their skills.

摘 要:作为一部反映中西文化差异的作品,电影《喜宴》生动形象的展现了在不同面子观的作用下,中西方在跨文化交际中的摩擦。通过该电影,读者可以更好的了解西方人对于面子观的看法,从而通过对比中国人的面子观来使国人意识到中西面子观内涵的差异,由此更好地促进不同文化的交流。本文主要分为三个部分,首先对中西方在面子观的研究方面做了介绍。其次通过对李安电影《喜宴》中具体例子以及细节的分析,主要结合电影中中西方送礼,婚礼的举办以及敬酒三个大方面,并结合之前谈到的面子观的研究来分析面子观不同对跨文化交际的影响,从而让读者意识到面子观的重要性,以及更加理解西方的面子观含义。最后针对面子观提供了一些跨文化交际的方法和对策,从而提高交际者的跨文化交际能力。

1. Introduction

As a complex psychological phenomenon, face has played an essential role in cross-cultural communication. Knowing the different views of face between China and western countries can help the communicator improve their skills in cross-cultural communication. The movie The Wedding Banquet is a good source for people to study the different face conceptions between China and western countries because it shows how the traditional Chinese family and an America deal with problems when it comes to face. Meanwhile, the director Li An is a master in making movies that represent the culture differences, so by analyzing this movie, we can find valuable information about the different views of face.

Firstly, the thesis introduces research about the face perceptions between China and western countries, from where we can know the development of the face theory. Secondly, by analyzing three scenes in the movie (the giving of gifts, the hosting of weddings, and toasting), we can tell that face really plays an essential role in cross-cultural communication. Lastly, the thesis provides some methods and ways on how to conduct cross-cultural communication to help the communicator to improve their skills. To sum up, by knowing the conception of face in other countries, we can better conduct cross-cultural communication.
