《学衡》诗歌翻译研究

摘 要

本文从《学衡》译诗的本体研究、翻译生态研究、思想研究三个层面对《学衡》英语诗歌翻译活动进行了宏观与微观的辩证考察。

本体研究从诗体、修辞、意象三方面展开,诗体研究分析了译诗如何从体裁、韵式上完成贴近原诗的形式转换;修辞研究分析了语音与比喻修辞在翻译活动中发生的变化;意象研究探讨了意象替换和意象增添发生的机制及其对翻译效果产生的影响。从翻译生态上看,《学衡》译诗的翻译活动以吴宓的学术经历为线索展开,吴宓在“翻译术”课上的清华学生是《学衡》译诗的主力军,《学衡》译诗与课堂教学紧密结合,《学衡》的翻译活动具有明显的学术性特征。在《学衡》翻译的思想研究中,吴宓作为《学衡》翻译的赞助人,通过经济赞助、课堂教学、编辑等方式操控和影响着《学衡》的翻译;原诗的选材,译诗诗体的选择以及翻译的审美表达三个方面皆体现着译者的诗学理念;译诗所选用的翻译语言属于归化翻译,但在新文化运动的背景下却体现了异化翻译策略的抗性。在翻译活动中《学衡》译者塑造了双重文化身份,一是对白璧德新人文主义思想辩证接受的独立的译者身份,二是作为中国古典诗歌传承者的本土文化身份。其所坚守的文化立场是包容自持的,最终的指向是在融会贯通东西方文化之精华的基础之上发展中国的新文化。

ABSTRACT

This dissertation makes a dialectical study of the poetry translation activities of the Xueheng magazine from the macroscopic and microscopic perspectives, including the ontological study, the translation ecological study and the ideological study. The noumenon study is carried out from three aspects: poetic style, rhetoric and images. The study of rhetoric analyzes the changes of phonetic and figurative rhetoric in translation. The study of images explores the mechanism of images’ substitution and images’ addition and their effects on translation. From the perspective of translation ecology, the translation activities of Xueheng are based on the academic experience of Wu Mi. Students of Tsinghua university in his "translation class" are the main force of Xueheng's poetry translation. The poetry translation of Xueheng is closely combined with teaching, and the translation activities of the Xueheng school have obvious academic characteristics. In the ideological study of the translation of Xueheng, Wu Mi, as the sponsor of the translation, manipulates and influences the translation by means of economic sponsorship, teaching and editing. The selection of the original poem, the choice of the poetic style of the translated poem and the aesthetic expression of the translation all embody the translators' poetic concepts. The translation strategy used in the translated poems is Domestication Translation. But in the context of the New Cultural Movement, it reflects the resistance of Foreignization Translation. In the translation activities, the translators of the Xueheng school has created two cultural identities: one is the independent translators’ identity who dialectically accepted the new humanism of Babbitt, and the other is the native cultural identity as the inheritor of Chinese classical poetry. Their cultural standpoint is inclusive and self-sustaining, and its ultimate goal is to develop new Chinese culture on the basis of integrating the essence of eastern and western cultures.
