Abstract: As an online teaching mode, MOOC teaching mode has achieved education equality to a certain degree due to its openness, convenience, and large-scale characteristics. However, the drawbacks and bottlenecks of the MOOC teaching model have become increasingly prominent in recent years. Many scholars have questioned the MOOC teaching model. It is undeniable that this new type of ‘flipping classroom’ teaching model has great advantages and bright prospects, and brings new opportunities and development for English teaching. This thesis focuses on three aspects. It introduces the origin and characteristics of MOOC, the application of MOOC in English teaching and the problems and solutions that MOOC faces. The in-depth analysis and research of MOOC in the application of English teaching is the need to explore new modes of education and also to meet the new requirements of the times.

  1. Introduction

1.1 Background

As a new, fresh type of teaching mode, MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) has developed rapidly in recent years. Based on the theory of connectivity and the open pedagogy of networked learning (Fan, 2012: 32), MOOC quickly occupies an important place in university education. Unlike the traditional offline education model, MOOC relies on network technology and gives online courses to students all over the world. Students can be free from time and space constraints. As long as there is a computer which is connected to the Internet, they can enjoy courses from different schools. At present, there are multiple MOOC platforms at home and abroad which has been offering perfect, technical online courses.

In recent years, more and more video open classes and online courses have started in Chinese universities (Jiao, 2013: 21). The rapid development of MOOC has also brought great convenience to English teaching. There are practical English courses on MOOC platforms, such as English writing, English reading, speaking, practical English writing... English learners can find English courses online and take them as a supplement to offline courses. Meanwhile, MOOC gives English learners the rights to choose their own teachers. It really helps to get rid of the hard adaptive process. So far, there is a growing number of schools and teachers are trying to apply the MOOC platforms to the traditional English teaching. The purpose of this article is to analyze the advantages of the MOOC teaching model and the opportunities and challenges it brings to traditional English teaching, and to arouse people’s attention and attention to MOOC teaching. This article aims to analyse the advantages of the MOOC teaching model and reveal the issues in practical English teaching.
