Abstract: The development of film-TV industry and the board communication among global culture have brought more and more excellent foreign works into China, among which English works are absolutely the majority. Therefore the subtitling translation emerges at the right moment. But now the subtitling translation stay at practice level, seldom under the guidance of scientific theories. The quality of subtitles translation is demanding and challenging.

The paper takes Game of Thrones as an sample for analysis with functional equivalence as theoretic basis, to make a study on how functional equivalence guides the subtitling translation and on how much or how well the target audience and source audience respond to the same massages, emotions and connotations of the works through the translated versions..

The paper analyses the subtitles of Game of Thrones from four levels: word, sentence, passage and style, concluding the practical way to use functional equivalence. and helping subtitling translation industry’s development.

摘要：当今世界，电影电视行业日新月异的发展，全球文化的广泛交流，越来越多的外国优秀作品涌入中国，其中英语作品占据着绝对数量优势。然而国人并未拥有普遍用英文可以无障碍欣赏这些作品，因此电影电视字幕翻译行业应运而生。然而目前字幕翻译大多停留在实践层面，极少受到专业理论的指导，字幕质量良莠不齐。

本文以功能对等理论作为理论依据，以美剧《冰与火之歌；权利的游戏》衣柜字幕组翻译的字幕为分析材料，探究功能对等理论如何指导字幕翻译。翻译时的标准应当是力求目标语观众收到同源语观众相同的信息，情感，内涵。

本文从功能对等的词汇，句子，篇章，文法四个方面出发，分析《权力的游戏》字幕翻译，总结功能对等理论的实际应用方法，希望对字幕翻译行业的发展有所助益。

Chapter One Introduction

As an important way to portray life and express emotions, films and television dramas have become an indispensable part of our lives. Since the birth of sound film, the audiovisual entertainments have brought an unprecedented experience to human beings. The audience can learn knowledge and gain happiness from these audiovisual works. The film-television industry，which emerged firstly in the Western world, through nearly a hundred years’ development, gradually becomes a mature industry. Compared with Western, China’s film-television industry began much later, the system has not developed to a top stage. As a good supplement and a symbol of culture intercommunication, foreign films and TV series have been introduced into China. The blowout of foreign introduced films and TV dramas happened after the reform and the opening-up. Following the foreign films and TV dramas, the translation of films and TV series rise in response.

There are two ways to translate audiovisual works: one is dubbing and the other is subtitle. As a field of translation, subtitle translation is an emerging one. However, due to the heavy workload, the subtitle translation mainly focuses on practice, seldom would pay attention to the theory guidance. Besides, The translators are mainly amateur film lovers, just a few are professional scholars who lead to the unstable quality of subtitle translation, and even the same works have different versions of translation.
