Feminist Analysis of translation of Jane Eyre

——Taking Huang Yuanshen’s version as an example

Abstract:

This article takes Huang Yuanshen’s version as an example to explain how the translator’s feminist viewpoints are embodied in the translation of Jane Eyre by a variety of translation strategies. After demonstrating from multiple perspectives, such as choice of words, adaption of sentence and cultural influence, and contrasting with other translators’ work, we find Huang as a male translator can still show his supportive attitude to feminism and express author’s meaning well, and whether feminism can be voiced in translation has nothing to do with the translator’s gender. At the same time, feminist translators’ work is influenced by his attitude to feminism in Feminist literature.

摘要：本文通过对黄源深版《简爱》译文的研究，论述了译者在翻译过程中如何利用翻译技巧表达自己的女权主义思想。通过选词、句式改写以及文化影响等方面的论述，以及与其他译者译文的对比发现，作为一位男性译者，黄源深先生在忠实原文的基础上，依然可以表达自己对于女权主义的支持态度，女权主义在翻译过程中能否体现与译者性别无关。同时,在女权主义文学翻译中，译文的效果一定程度上受译者对女权主义思想的态度影响。

1. Introduction

1.1 Introduction to Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre is a novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë. It is a novel of distinct biographical style. By describing the meandering love story of Jane Eyre and Rochester, this novel depicts a female image which always commits to maintain independent personality, pursue freedom, advocate equality between men and women, and can never be defeated by the fate. After published for more than one hundred years, Jane Eyre is still popular in various countries in the world. Its realistic significance has a great influence, especially on feminist movement and emancipation of women.

1.2Introduction to feminism

Feminism, which also can be called female liberation, refers to social theories and political movements which are initiated to end sexism, sexual exploitation and sexual oppression, and promote gender equality at the same time. It is a kind of social movement crossing boundaries of class and race.

The earliest feminist in the west originated in France, and then spread to other countries in Europe, America and all over the world. The ideological trend to fight for woman’s rights and freedom has been here for over 200 years, which began with Declaration of the Rights of Woman and Female Citizen by Olympe de Gouges in 1790s. Females were made to reflect on the secondary situation they were in. There was also a change for them from compliance to disobedience. There are three main stages in the process of Feminism in the west. The first-generation feminism extended from latter half of the 19th century to early twentieth century. The second-generation feminism which is also called “Modern Feminism” extended from early twentieth century to 1960s. The last stage was from 1960s to this day, and it’s called “Postmodern Feminism”.

In its first stage, feminism is considered on the background of generalization and it emphasizes that females should participate in the social activities as an participator equal to the males. The source of feminism in west can be traced back to Renaissance and Reformation. People represented by Boccaccio, Montaigne, Francesco Petrarch and Chaucer started “equality of men and women” for matrimonial problem firstly.

Western feminist movement moved into the second stage in 1960s to 1970s. Feminism movement in this stage emphasized intrinsic positivity of females. It was characterized by feminist consciousness of subjectivity  and the criticism of patriarchal society. Several independent female organizations were established. At the same time, in this stage feminist theory becomes a significant field of humanities. Jane Eyre was composed in this stage as well as Wuthering Heights and Middlemarch.
