Firstly, I would like to thank my adviser Ms. Jiang Ping for her careful guidance. When I was unable to contact her in time to discuss the issue of the paper, she sent messages to remind me of my mistakes and helped me correct them promptly. A Study on the English Learning Strategies of Secondary School Students

Abstract: Learning strategy is the process in which learners take steps, methods and skills in order to achieve language knowledge and information, and then consciously adjust their behavior. With the development of the information society and the increasingly fierce social competition, teaching students how to learn has been the focus of educational circles. The thesis firstly introduces the definition the types and the principles of learning strategies, and then it analyzes the present situation of the secondary school students’ English learning. At the same time, certain specific learning strategies are discussed in detail, involving vocabulary, grammar, writing etc. Besides, some suggestions on how to improve the English learning efficiency of secondary school students are also put forward by author herself, although these views still need to be further validated in practice.

摘要:学习策略是学习者为获取语言知识和信息,进而有意识地调节自己的行为所采取的步骤、方法和技巧的过程。随着信息社会的发展以及社会竞争的日益激烈,教会学生学习成为了近年来教育界关注的焦点问题。本文简单介绍了学习策略的定义、类型和原则;并结合中学生英语学习的现状,分析了中学英语学习策略的重要性。与此同时,本文分别从词汇、语法、口语、写作等方面,探讨了相应的英语学习策略。此外,文章还就如何提高中学生的英语学习效率、让学生学会高效学习等问题,提出了自己的看法和建议,尽管这些看法还有待于在实践中作进一步验证。

  1. Introduction

“Learning strategies are the learning experience and shortcuts summed up and searched out in the process of students” (Tao Yuefu, 2015:133). It not only has impacts on students’ grades but also influences the long-term development of their learning. In the English learning process, learning strategies also play an important role.

According to English Curriculum Standards, in the secondary school stage, the main task of English teaching is to stimulate students’ interests in learning English, develop good study habits, and form right and effective learning strategies. There is no denying that educators begin to attach great importance to the application of learning strategies. However, concrete methods and steps to improve students’ English learning strategies and enhance their learning enthusiasm are not effectively designed at present. The majority of students have little interest in English learning. Some of them even hate and abandon their studies, since those students are forced to learn English, and they are not willing to learn English with all their hearts. At the same time, some students with bad performance may have psychological problems, because they think that English is a kind of torture and learning English is a great pressure.

Hence, only through a detailed analysis of the students’ English learning strategies, can students solve the problems effectively and improve learning interest and enthusiasm.
