Error Analysis of English Preposition used by Chinese English Learners

Abstract: English prepositions play a crucial role in helping learners to master the characteristics of English language system. This paper focuses on analyzing prepositional errors made by Chinese English learners according to the theory of Error Analysis. Through Error Analysis theory, Chinese English learners know main errors made by them when they use English prepositions. For these mistakes, the paper gives corresponding suggestions respectively, and ultimately help Chinese English learners to reduce the usage of prepositional errors. In short, error analysis of English prepositions plays an important part in English learning.

摘 要：英语介词对英语学习者掌握英语的语言体系特性有着至关重要的作用。本论文根据错误分析理论对英语学习者常犯的几种介词错误进行剖析。通过错误分析理论，中国英语学习者了解到使用英语介词时出现的主要错误。针对这些错误，本文提出相应的建议，最终帮助中国英语学习者减少介词使用错误。总而言之，英语介词的错误分析对英语学习者学习英语起着非常重要的作用。

1. Introduction

1. English Preposition

1.1 The definition of preposition

“Prepositions are used in conjunction with nouns, pronouns, and gerund, and that they can be connected to other words in the context of grammar. A phrase consisting is a structure consisting of a preposition and a preposition and its object. ” (Richard, 2005:34).

Prepositions are used to express the relationship between words and words, words, and sentences. There is usually a noun or other parts of speech, phrases, or clauses that are equivalent to the. The preposition and its object phrase as adverbial in the sentence, the predicate, complement or prepositional object.

1.2 The classification of preposition

(i) According to its composition can be divided into:

1) Simple prepositions

Such as in, with, by, for, at...

2) Compound Preposition

Such as within, into, throughout, inside, outside...

3) Overlapping prepositions

Such as from among, from behind, until after, at about, after about...

4) Prepositional phrase

One or two simple prepositions and one or several other parts of speech form a phrase that acts as a preposition, which is called a prepositional phrase. The end of this kind of preposition is always a simple preposition. Such as: according to, because of, by means of, in addition to, in front of, in spite of...
