A Tentative Study on Some Versions of Famous Verses by Li Po

Abstract: As an important part of translation practice, verse translation, containing unique aesthetic principles and methods, is related with literary creation. If we put assessment of aesthetic values into practice, it would be more beneficial. The Night Thoughts written by Li Po has been spread for more than a thousand years. It describes a man’s homesickness in a quiet night who is traveling in a place far away from home. It is claimed as the Best Poem of Homesickness for A Thousand Years. As another famous poem by Li Po, Drinking Alone with the Moon expresses the poet’s feeling of being lonely and shows his character of being romantic. Besides, it contains his depression and discontent caused by loss in officialdom and being squeezed out. Many translators have translated them into different kinds of languages. This dissertation chooses versions from translators with different backgrounds, for that there are many differences between China and the West, which involve culture, history, economy and politics. I would also analyze the poems from different aspects --the word, the phrase, the sentence and even the section based on the historical background. The author is aimed at studying on translation skills via comparing and analyzing versions of translation of these two poems.

摘 要

诗歌翻译作为翻译活动的一大重要组成部分，它与文学相关，却又独特的审美规则与方法技巧。鉴赏诗歌翻译时运用美学观念有助于翻译活动的进行。李白的《静夜思》，已流传千余年，抒发的是在寂静的月夜游子的思乡之情，更被誉为“千古思乡第一诗”。作为另一首出自李白的名诗,《月下独酌》抒发了诗人孤独寂寞之感，更表现出了诗人的浪漫情怀，以及官场失意、受人排挤的愤懑。,颇多翻译家将这两首经典之作译成外文版本。译者通过对原作的理解与整体把握，利用另一种语言进行再创作。由于中西之间存在着文化上、历史上、经济上、政治上的差异，故本文特意选取了中西多位译者的译文，且结合诗人创作此诗的历史背景对词、句与篇章进行对比、赏析。笔者旨在通过对两首诗的多版译文分析与比较，进行对翻译方法的探索研究。

Chapter One Introduction

In the rich and profound Chinese culture, poetry occupies an important role, especially the poetry of Tang Dynasty. Thus, we should pay much attention to translation of poetry, which requires us to maintain the origin meaning and blaze new trails in a pioneering spirit based on the target of promoting the communication of Chinese and Western culture. The first step is to learn how to appreciate from multiple viewpoints, like time, writers, readers and social cultures.

Appreciating a poem from time angle means that we should focus on epochal character because the same work reveals various implication and aesthetic effect in different ages. When we analyze a poem from the angle of writers, their life experiences, literary attainment and personality traits are three main factors which needs to be taken into consideration. This so-called viewpoint of social culture means that appreciators regard the social backgrounds and cultural tradition as the key.

1.1 Introduction of Li Po

Li Po(705 - 762), also called Li Bai ,is regarded as one of the greatest romantic poets of the Tang dynasty and of China of all times, who styled himself as Taibai and Buddhist Qinglian. He is a hearty and generous man who likes to drink, versify and make acquaintance with others. Li Po, the poetic genius, wrote more than 320 poems about the moon in his lifetime.

1.2 Introduction of time background

Initially, freedom of the political environment played an important role in promoting the prosperity of poetry. The government took fair measures like imperial competitive examination to create enlightened culture atmosphere. Emperors in Tang Dynasty are broadminded and far-sighted. The most essential factor is that Tang Dynasty is flourishing as never before. Another factor that cannot be ignored is that part of the nobility of society do well in poetry which had a directed impact. Besides, the booming of economy lays a material foundation of cultural property. Thirdly, evolution of culture provides Tang Dynasty with a special background, among which realism coexists with romanticism. Generally speaking, no matter where on the one hand, Tang is qualified to offer a superexellent condition to poetry creation, which forms China’s peculiar poetical literature.

1.3 Introduction of two poems

As one of Li Po’s magnum opus, Night Thoughts describes what he thinks when he is looking up at the sky on an autumn night. Several writing techniques like analogy and foil can be found in it. The other one, Drinking Alone with the Moon, reflects Li Po’s disappointment of loss in officialdom and being squeezed by others by showing a scene that he drinks alone under the moon.

As the most famous poem by Li Po, Night Thoughts have been translated into various versions. In this context, I select four among them to appreciate.
