Abstract: Wuthering Heights is a great novel with obvious feminism features written by British female writer Emily Jane Bronte. Feminism translation advocates the way of translating through the recreation and it gives full play to the translator’s subjectivity. Taking Yang Yi’s Version of Wuthering Heights as an example, the thesis aims to help the readers further understand the translator’s subjectivity and the influence of feminism on translation via the analysis on the novel’s name, the description of physical appearance, language, psychological activities, social culture etc. Only in this way, can the readers perceive the profound meaning between the lines. However, feminism translation theory has its own imperfections, so we should observe and study it dialectically.

Key words: Wuthering Heights;feminism translation theory;criticism and correction

1. Introduction

1.1 Research background

In the 1960s, the second wave of the feminism movements emerged in the western world and made a great difference on all aspects of the superstructure. Waged by intellectual women, the war in ideologies, which ranged from politics, culture, literature, etc. promoted the development of feminism in the field of academy. Gender in translation:Cultural identity and the politics of transmission (Sherry, 1996), which is written by the famous Canadian translation theorist Sherry Simon, firstly have a comprehensive study on gender issues in translation theory and practice. He shows how women translators have long acted as literary activists, creating new lines of transmission and contributing to cultural debates. (Sherry, 1996:1) Actually, feminism provided a tremendous opportunity to reposition and transform the subjectivity of the translator, especially female translator’s subjectivity. With the joint efforts of a group of female translators and feminist critics, the formation of feminist translation theory and translation studies provide a new perspective in the field of translation. And the novel Wuthering Heights, which is first published in 1847, is a great literary work with obvious feminism features written by British female writer Emily Jane Bronte. As the second eldest of the three surviving Bronte sisters, she was said to be as talented as her sisters --- Charlotte Bronte and Anne Bronte. In fact, Emily Jane Bronte (30 July 1818 — 19 December 1848) was not only an English novelist but also a poet. However, she did not leave much spiritual treasure for the world for she died at a very young age and she was famous for her only novel , a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights. At the beginning, her book was published under the androgynous pen name Ellis Bell instead of her real name. To be short, Wuthering Heights revolved around the tragic love story of Catherine and Heathcliff, especially portraying a female figure of independent consciousness --- for love and marriage, who is a representative with rebellious spirit in that society under the dominance of the paternity. However , when Wuthering Heights firstly published out, it did not make a hit in no time. Actually, it was after many yeas that it began to be regarded as a great work - the most unique novel. And as a result, Emily Jane Bronte was thought as a genius female writer in Britain in the 19th century for it.
