At the first, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the people who have helped me during my thesis writing.

First, my deepest gratitude goes first and foremost to Professor Zhao Yamin . Without her consistent and illuminating instruction, this thesis could not have reached its present form. During the course of thesis writing, she encouraged me to read more relevant magazines, check more papers on the Internet to enrich the content of the paper as well as improve my own understanding of this topic. Although she is busy in her teaching, she still calls me to discuss the paper’s problem, and helps me to check the book about this paper. She not only noted with the misnomer in my thesis, but also told me how to correct them and why I had made such mistakes. It is because of her careful instruction and continuing supervision that I finally completed this paper. I choose the title but it’s hard to find the reference materials in foreign languages. She told me the way to check it and help me with the point of my topic with patience.

Also I want to express my gratitude to all of the teachers and professors in the English Department. They devoted themselves to teaching and delivered untold quantities of excellent lectures, which is of great use for me to lay a hard foundation for my career.

On the English Translation of

the Regional Culture in Bailu Yuan

Abstract: Bailu Yuan, which has won Mao Dun Literature Prize, is rich in Guanzhong culture in Shaanxi and narrates the complicated modern history of the people there. Naturally, its English translation will be influential and difficult as well. This paper compares the Chinese and Western cultures in the novel, examines the various kinds of differences caused by translation in cultural factors, such as language, lifestyle, religion and customs, etc., and explores the reasons behind this phenomenon, with an aim to provide some inspirations for our going-out strategy of Chinese culture and literature.

摘要：反映陕西关中地方文化和近代历史的《白鹿原》是茅盾文学奖获奖作品，其英语翻译势必影响巨大，难度也是巨大。本文通过其中西文化的比较，分析了其丰富的文化蕴涵在翻译中的种种差异，包括语言、生活方式、宗教、习俗等等，阐释了造成这些差异的背后因素， 以期为中国文学文化走出去战略提供一些有益的启示。

Introduction

Chen Zhongshi , an outstanding contemporary realist writer with a national spirit in China, won the Mao Dun Literature Award by his masterpiece Bailu Yuan in 1997. Bailu Yuan has been included in "College-students-must-read" series by the Ministry of Education, and more than 1.6 million copies have been published up to now. Besides, it has been transformed into drama, dance, film and other art forms. Bailu Yuan was serialized on the journal of Dang Dai in 1992. In June 1993 the People’s Literature Publishing House published its book form. In the early 1980s, the trend of "reflection literature" was created by the special political environment. This trend was gradually generalized into a popular literary spirit in the 1980s. However, it affects the 1990s' long creation, and most of them are involuntarily closer to this spirit, which also reached a new height with a long period of creation concerning the national history and culture reflection. With the creative desire in this trend of literature, Chen completed the epic work that can represent the new height in Chinese Literature. The novel has succeeded in shaping the typical image of Bai Jiaxuan , Lu Zilin , Lu San, and Mr. Zhu, which have profound historical and cultural contents, and also created a Heiwa, Bai Xiaowen, Tian Xiao'e, Lu Zhaopeng , Lu Zhaohai, Bai Ling and other young generation of different personality, different dream, which are very representative character image of the times.

After the creation of his novel Mr. Blue Robe in 1985, Chen began to think of our national destiny deeply. In order to complete a "secret history of a nation" which can make him at rest after death, Chen spent almost three years in making a few aspects of preparations. First, a wide collection of relevant historical data and materials, including the county magistrate, local history of Communist Party of China and historical materials; Second, a wide range of reading concerning the modern history of China, including "Modern History", "The Rise and Fall", "Japanese", "Psychology", "Criminal Psychology", "Dream Analysis", "The Path of Beauty”,"Artistic Creation Project" and others. Third, the art of preparation. He carefully selected a variety of novels at home and abroad to learn from others.
