Abstract: Translation is the mediator of culture. The fundamental task of translation is to reproduce the thought and style of the original work faithfully. Literature translation has to be not only faithful, but also with its unique style.

This paper demonstrates the basic concepts and rules of the skopos theory, and introduces the skopos theory into the translation strategies. This essay also discusses general strategies of literature translation including domestication, foreignization, literal translation and so on by comparing, discussing and analyzing Sun Zhili and other two translators’ versions of Pride and Prejudice. 1. Introduction

The essence of translation is a language transformation activity. It is a mediator among all kinds of cultures. Same as a cross-cultural communicative activity, translation sometimes is a compromise from one plan to another. Being a part of culture, language has its own cultural characteristics in different districts and nations. Since culture is defined as “the totality of beliefs and practices of a society”, nothing is of greater strategic importance than the language through which its beliefs are express and transmitted and by which most interaction of its members takes place (Nida, 1998: 1).

The traditional translation theories mostly center round original texts. In the traditional translation theories, “Faithfulness" and “source-text-oriented” emphasize the equivalence between the translation and the original, which were regarded as the highest standard of the criterion of translation. The translation should be faithful to the original, especially literary translation.

As for skopos theory, the purpose of translation is not only the top priority of translation practice, but also the main criterion of evaluating translations. In the practice of translation, the skopos theory put a greater emphasis on the translator’s creativity and subjectivity. The translator does not have to "keep pace with the original" at different requirements of translation purposes. Literary translation is a special field of translation. This thesis will analyze three Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice to explore the guiding role of the skopos theory on literary translation.

This paper is divided into three parts. The first chapter introduces Pride and Prejudice and its author Jane. Austen; the second chapter introduces the skopos theory applied in the translation of literature works; and the last one analyzes the choice of translation strategies in Pride and Prejudice, taking Sun Zhili, Wang Keyi and Zhang Jinghao’s versions as examples.
