Non-linguistic Context and Translation

Abstract: Context, known as the environment of language, is a core concept in linguistics. Translation is a kind of cross-cultural communicative activity, in which language is the medium and no less than two languages are involved. Thus in the process of translating, to convey the precise intention of the source text, the translator must take context into full consideration, especially non-linguistic context which is always invisible. This paper introduces the characteristics and classification of non-linguistic context. On this basis, examples from aspects of situational context and background context are enumerated to discuss the influence of non-linguistic context on translation, so as to draw attention of translators to non-linguistic context when translating, thereby improving the quality of translation and promoting the communication between different cultures.

摘要：语境，即语言环境，是语言学的一个核心概念。翻译是一种以语言为媒介的跨文化交际活动，其中涉及至少两种语言。因而，为了准确传达原文本的思想，译者在翻译的过程中必须充分考虑语境因素，尤其是非语言语境，因为它通常是隐性存在的。本文介绍了非语言语境的特点及分类，在此基础上，列举情景语境和背景语境两方面的实例探讨了非语言语境对于翻译的影响，以期引起译者对于非语言语境对翻译影响的关注，从而提高翻译质量，促进不同文化之间的交流。

1. Introduction

The concept of context was first put forward by British anthropologist B.Malinowski in 1923. Then during the following years till now, a lot of concern has been aroused about context study among linguists, philosophers, even psychologists. Although they are scholars from different fields and have their own angle of thinking, the attention they have paid to context implies the great importance that context has in communication.

Each person is an individual with his or her own way of expressing, which cannot be felt or reacted only in a right way by people speaking the same language. This is the case in communication within one language, then how about communication among different cultures? Translation as the means of information converting and transferring seems to be much more tough and vital. And, translators in the process of translating must put context into an overall consideration, so as to thoroughly understand the source text and exactly convey the author’s original intention (Chen Yuhong, 2010: 3).

This thesis, on the basis of the previous achievements of context by predecessors, will discuss translation from the perspective of non-linguistic context in order to draw attention of translators to context, especially non-linguistic context in translation.
