The Effects of Motivation on Middle School Students’ English Learning

Abstract: Learning motivation is a certain kind of inner impetus to drive students’ study, which contains learning needs and learning expectations. Studies have shown that learning motivation and achievement have a positive correlation, that is, people with high motivation tend to have better achievement than those with low motivation. The thesis makes a brief account of motivation, and then it analyzes the role of motivation and the factors that influence learning motivation in middle school English teaching. Combined with the current situation of middle school students’ English learning, the thesis from another aspect denotes the reasons for low learning motivation. In the meantime, it discusses the ways to stimulate middle school students’ learning motivation, enhance their initiative and enthusiasm for English learning, thus improving their English.

摘要:学习动机是指直接鞭策学习者进行学习的一种内部能源,它包括学习需要和学习期待两个部分。根据研究评释,学习动机和学业成就之间存在一定的正相关,高动机者比低动机者倾向于拥有更好的成就作为。本文简要介绍了学习动机的相关内容;并剖析了学习动机在中学生英语学习中的作用,以及影响英语学习动机的要素。与此同时,文章联结当今中学生英语学习的现状,指出了形成中学生学习动机低下的起因,并就如何最大限度地激发中学生英语学习动机、增强其英语学习的积极性和主动性,进而提升中学生英语能力等问题进行了深入的探讨。

1. Introduction

Students’ learning motivation not only influences their grades but also concerns the long-term development of English teaching. In fact, learning motivation plays an extremely important part in the learning process. It accounts for a surprisingly large proportion in all walks of life, such as when people take into account that how to cheer up lazy students, how to make boring language class interesting, how to award or punish students in some circumstance, and other countless situations. Therefore, in middle school English learning, how to motivate students' motivation and maintain their interests are of great importance. In 2001, Ministry of Education promulgated the new Junior Middle School English New Curriculum Standard for the part of compulsory education, and it was in effect in 2003. The task of compulsory English learning is aimed to cultivate and inspire students’ interest in learning English, to help students to build confidence and to develop good studying habits. Thus there is no denying that learning motivation has received certain recognitions.

However, concrete ways and steps to enhance students’ English learning enthusiasm and initiative are not effectively worked out. Many middle school students still show little interest in learning English. They are forced to learn, and they are not willing to learn English through their own heart. Besides, some students with bad grades in English may consider English class as a kind of torture, while for those students with good grades, they consider English learning as great pleasure. Therefore, only by the detailed analysis of students' motivation to learn English well, can people solve the problem effectively and improve learning enthusiasm and initiative.
